Even if you watch what you eat and exercise regularly, you might still see pockets of fat that are keeping you from feeling confident in yourself. James Rough, M.D. Plastic Surgery in Tucson, AZ offers the latest methods to safely remove fat from certain body parts. MicroAire® is a power-assisted liposuction (PAL®) technique while VASER® is a high-definition liposuction technique. Both methods reduce pockets of fat from the flanks, tummy, buttocks, and thighs to create a more defined appearance. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. James Rough received his training in high-definition liposuction from the surgeon in Colombia who created the technique and invites you to set up a consultation with him for VASER liposuction or MicroAire PAL to see how either one of these minimally invasive treatments can help you attain your ideal body.
What Are The Benefits Of Liposuction?
Liposuction is a highly effective way to treat and eliminate unwanted fat from areas of the body. Its many benefits include:
- Removal of stubborn, unwanted fat from problem areas
- Produces optimal results even if diet and exercise have failed
- Can treat multiple body areas
- Provides treatment for medical issues like gynecomastia, lipodystrophy syndrome, and others
- Recovery time is typically short (within weeks)
- Enhanced self-image and confidence
- Minimal scarring
Am I A Candidate For Liposuction?
Liposuction is a terrific procedure for individuals who are at a healthy weight, but have troublesome areas of fat that cannot be resolved with diet and exercise alone. Those interested in liposuction should have healthy skin because liposuction is not a treatment for loose skin. It is also important to know that liposuction is not a solution for weight loss. Females undergoing liposuction should have no plans to become pregnant again as this could compromise the outcome. At the time of your consult for surgery, Dr. Rough will set realistic expectations.
How is Liposuction Performed?
VASER and MicroAire liposuction are both performed in an outpatient setting under general anesthesia. A very small incision is made through the skin, and a cannula will be placed. For VASER, the cannula is a tube that will release ultrasound energy to help loosen the fat so it can be gently suctioned out. MicroAire, on the other hand, uses a cannula with a vibrating tip that helps break down the fat. After the fat deposits have been removed, Dr. Rough will close the incision with dissolvable sutures. Depending on the number of areas being treated, your procedure may last several hours. Afterward, you will be asked to wear a compression garment for six weeks and pain medication may be prescribed for the first week.
What Can I Expect After Liposuction?
You may need to recover at home from liposuction surgery for 1 – 3 weeks depending on the amount of areas treated and the amount of fat removed. It is normal to see bruising and swelling for one or two weeks, and you can have the sutures taken out on day seven to day ten. What is most important following any surgery is to allow your body time to rest and recover. When you decide to go back to your job after your procedure, you should do your best to take it easy. To increase your strength and stamina, stick to walking and light workouts as advised by Dr. Rough. Keep in mind you may see some changes after six weeks, but it will take 6 – 10 months before your new body shape and contour is attained.
James Rough, M.D. Plastic Surgery Reviews
I had a mommy Makeover on October 7th performed by Dr. Rough,. After visiting 4 Plastic Surgeons in Tucson and Scottdale I decided to go with Dr. Rough. He and his staff are, hands down, the best! Not only I am beyond happy with the results he is a very compassionate person. I called him with a few questions after my surgery and he always answered in a timely manner. He listened to me and validate my feelings. I highly recommend Dr Rough when it comes to Plastic surgery.
I would highly recommend Dr. Rough to my family and closest friends. I had breast augmentation done about two years after having a baby. I am so incredibly happy with the results. They look exactly the way I hoped they would. Dr. Rough was kind, caring, and ensured I felt comfortable throughout the entire process. I felt like he listened to me and truly cared about what I wanted. I was worried about how breast augmentation might affect running and working out, and Dr. Rough answered all of my questions. Anissa was also wonderful- she is very friendly and always available to answer questions. The day of surgery was easy, and I felt well taken care of by the entire team. I am so grateful for the confidence that Dr. Rough gave me.
Dr. Rough and his staff were amazing: professional, compassionate, and knowledgeable! He let me know what would work best for me and my body, and following his recommendation, the results from my elective surgery far exceeded any expectation I could imagine! I am absolutely in love with the results and I have Dr. Rough and his staff to thank! Thanks this team, for the first time in my life, I am in love with my body!! Highly recommended!!
I will update this review as I get through the process but I want to start now so I don’t forget anything: I had done 12 virtual consultations and 3 in person consultations before my consultation with Dr. rough for my skin removal post weight loss (tummy tuck) After meeting with him I didn’t feel the urge to meet with anyone else; I knew I wanted him as my surgeon. When I walked into the very clean smelling office I was greeted by a receptionist who was wearing a face mask but despite not being able to see half her face her personality still shined through as helpful, polite and happy. I arrived 10 minutes early and was seen right on time. When Dr. Rough came into the room he made sure to answer all my questions, he showed me what areas he would be able to work and always followed his direct responses with an easy to understand medical reason for why something could or couldn’t happen. He made sure to have a female assistant (I’m not sure of her title) in the room the entire time I was unrobed. He checked with me to make sure the extra eyes in the room was ok prior to but the fact that I didn’t have to request her myself made me feel very comfortable as not all the surgeons before him did that. I won’t discuss the actual price because pricing can change based on your needs but I got a tummy tuck with MR and Lipo to the abdomen. He also address the pelvic area so I wouldn’t look like a ken doll after surgery. It was a lot of money but not nearly as much as some surgeons were charging. I got my surgery today 9/9/2022 - the anesthesiologist was hilarious and very sweet. The nurses at the surgical center made me feel like I was making a good decision and after I got out of surgery they monitored me and sent me home. Apparently I am hilarious when recovery from anesthesia but that doesn’t belong in this review lol I am now home with a clear understanding of the medications I need to take and how frequently I should empty my drains. Dr rough called at 830pm to check on me and make sure all is well before our appointment tomorrow. I am able to walk hunched over but no crazy complications or greys anatomy style issues. I will update this after seeing my incision tomorrow and again after a few months. Over all my experience so far is outstanding and I encourage you to consider him as your surgeon. Update: I am 3 days post op. I did my one day follow up yesterday. Dr rough was very thorough about what to do next and I’m able to shower today! He also gave his cellphone number for any questions I may have and his response time has been with in minutes. One of my main concerns was how surgeons do their incisions and belly buttons- he EXCEEDED my expectation. He gave me an innie belly button and it looks so natural!!!! Even the incision was super low and he did his absolute best to avoid cutting through my side tattoos. I’ll update again after drains are out in a few weeks but still 5 stars
I recently had breast augmentation done and I could not be more happy! Dr.Rough has done a great job along with the help of Anissa.I’m glad I decided to go with him preforming surgery after looking at other doctors in town.

About UsLiposuction FAQs
Does liposuction help treat cellulite and loose skin?
Surgical liposuction only addresses excess fat in the body. If you have loose skin, Dr. Rough may recommend combining liposuction with lift surgery. Liposuction is often performed along with skin tightening surgery, such as a tummy tuck, arm lift, or thighplasty, to give you the best results. To correct cellulite, there are many minimally invasive and nonsurgical treatment options available. In your consultation, talk to Dr. Rough about your concerns like loose skin and cellulite so a comprehensive treatment plan is created.
Will I have scars after liposuction?
Since liposuction is a surgical procedure, incisions will need to be made and stitched. This will create scars; however, Dr. Rough does his best to reduce their appearance. This starts with making thin incisions in the natural folds of your body or in less visible areas. After your surgery, Dr. Rough or a member of his team will explain how to care for your incisions, so they heal properly and fade.
Will my liposuction results last?
Before liposuction, it is important to be prepared to maintain your results. Although liposuction reduces the amount of fat cells in an area, you can still lose and gain weight. Dr. Rough recommends that you be at or near a healthy weight before having liposuction surgery. Afterward, it's best to stay within 5 – 10 pounds of your post-surgical weight. Getting pregnant after liposuction will also impact your results; however, a second surgery or mommy makeover can be done to refresh your appearance.
